The Amboseli Giant Expedition

3 Days Price on Request Kenya, East Africa English / Swahili

About This Tour

Amboseli is world-renowned for providing the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa’s highest peak) and for being the home of Africa’s most studied and celebrated "Giant Tuskers." This journey takes you through five distinct habitats—from dried-up lake beds to lush sulphur springs—where massive elephant families congregate in numbers found nowhere else on earth.

Tour Highlights

The Kilimanjaro Backdrop: Capture the ultimate safari photograph: elephant herds traversing the plains with the snow-capped 5,895m summit of Kilimanjaro standing clear behind them.
The Giant Tuskers: Track the legendary Amboseli elephants, known for having some of the largest ivory tusks in the world.
Observation Hill (Nomatior): Hike this volcanic pyramid for a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire park, including the emerald-green swamps where hippos and buffalo spend their days
The Enkongo Narok Swamps: Explore the life-giving marshes fed by underground meltwater from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers—a magnet for over 400 species of birds.
Predator Prowl: Navigate the acacia woodlands and open savannah to spot resident lion prides, cheetahs on the hunt, and spotted hyenas.

Tour Itinerary

1
Morning Departure: Leave Nairobi at dawn, driving south toward the Tanzania border through the changing landscapes of the Maasai rangelands.
2
The Grand Arrival: Enter through the Meshanani or Kimana Gate, greeted by the sudden, overwhelming scale of Mount Kilimanjaro (best visible on clear mornings).
3
Midday Oasis: Check into your lodge or tented camp—many of which are positioned to offer mountain views directly from your veranda.
4
Sunset at the Marsh: Watch the light turn golden over the wetlands before returning to your camp for a "bush dinner.
1
Sunrise Mountain Watch: Set out at first light. This is your best window for a cloud-free view of Kilimanjaro’s summit before the midday mist rolls in.
2
Observation Hill Hike: Disembark at the summit of Observation Hill to survey the vastness of the park and spot hippos in the swamp below from a safe, elevated vantage point.
3
Midday Picnic: Enjoy a packed lunch at a designated site, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wild savannah.
4
Lakeside Circuit: Explore the shimmering, alkaline flats of Lake Amboseli (the "salty dust" place) to see mirages and desert-adapted species like the fringe-eared oryx.
5
Evening Sundowner: Toast to the day’s sightings at a scenic viewpoint as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in deep violets and oranges.
1
Early Morning Prowl: One last sunrise game drive to look for predators—lions or cheetahs—who are most active in the cooler morning air.
2
Breakfast with a View: Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast while watching the mountain one last time.
3
Mid-Morning Transit: Begin your journey out of the park, keeping your binoculars ready for "en-route" sightings of giraffes and zebras.
4
Return Journey: Relax on the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon with your camera full of the world’s most iconic wildlife silhouettes.
